Cadets from the Kayo Maru meet with Russia

Traditionally, on May 11, the Japanese training ship Kayo Maru with the cadets of the Higher Maritime School, Niigata Prefecture, arrived at the port of Vladivostok. This is their 23rd visit to Vladivostok - a unique example of international cooperation and a true symbol of friendship between Russia and Japan. From May 11 to 13, the staff of the Nevelskoy MSU rendered hospitality to the crew, teachers and cadets of the Kayo Maru. This time the Japanese guests arrived on the brand new Kayo Maru, which provides much better habitability and conditions for the cadets` shipboard training. On the first day (May 11), a city tour was organized for the teachers and students. The guests learned the history of Vladivostok, traveled along the Golden Bridge, visited the Mariinsky Theater`s specific site, learned about the basics of Orthodox culture and visited the Pokrovsky Cathedral. They also honored the memory of the Japanese poetess Yosano Akiko, whose monument was erected in Vladivostok in 1994. Also they walked to the Tokarevsky Lighthouse. After the tour they came to the Maritime University to play friendly basketball and volleyball matches with the cadets of the Maritime and Maritime Technology Colleges. On the second day of their stay (May 12), the crew of the Nadezhda sailing and training ship, where the cadets of the Maritime and Maritime Technological Colleges are doing their shipboard training period, received the teachers and cadets. The cadets` joint setting of the sail, as well as its laying became an unforgettable impression. Videos about the cadets` life aboard the Nadezhda were shown. The Japanese teacher of the Nevelskoy MSU Language Training Department Mr. Miyamoto Tadashi participated in organizing an excursion to the city center. In the evening, the crew of the Kayo Maru organized a friendly meeting on board for the cadets of the Maritime College. The third day (May 13) was devoted to the excursions, visits to the museums, the Far Eastern Fisheries University, TINRO-Center and Nevelskoy MSU. In the evening, at a friendly dinner, captain of the Kayo Maru noted that the Sea of Japan does not divide us, but, on the contrary, unites. May 14, the Kayo Maru departed for her home port of Niigata.
