The Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University is one of the oldest universities in the Far East. Founded in 1890 in Vladivostok the Alexander Nautical Classes laid the foundation for maritime education in Primorsky Krai. The Nevelskoy MSU trains specialists of all spheres required for the sea transportation system in natural sciences, humanities, engineering and marine areas under the Convention. The University is not only the first Russian Maritime State University, one of the leading universities in the Asia-Pacific region, but also an authoritative research and methodological center of maritime education.

In accordance with the Russian State Education Standard, a multi-level system of higher education is implemented: Bachelor for 4 years, Specialist for 5 years, and Master for 6 years. A complex of the programs is a continuous maritime training system from the basic to post-graduate one. The educational programs are implemented on the basis of the continuous maritime training system. The curricula allow cadets and students to choose the level of training while learning. Forward-looking training of specialists is conducted at all stages of education at the University, given the prospects of development of Russian water transport and maritime infrastructure of the Far East.
The Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University trains specialists to work on board sea and river vessels, for sea and river ports, factories, transport terminals, power complexes, etc. It trains bachelors in onshore specialties: development of information products for the system of protection of marine areas and coastal zones against oil pollution, operating special machinery and equipment on oil and gas fields, managers and economists for enterprises in the sphere of sea transport, maritime lawyers and others, including specialists in humanities.
The Admiral Nevelskoy MSU includes the Lyceum, two colleges and three branches which train working professions and provide secondary professional education.

The Maritime University has a Branch in Kholmsk (Island Sakhalin) - TB Guzhenko Sakhalin Higher Maritime College, Amur Branch in Blagoveshchensk and Nakhodka Branch as well as representative offices in Moscow and Khabarovsk.
Highly skilled teachers with many years of experience in the field of education and fleet: 65 professors, more than 270 associate professors, and dozens of faculty and staff awarded with honorary titles train specialists for the maritime sector at the Nevelskoy MSU.
The method of the score-rating system of students’ knowledge evaluation is being worked through during three years at the University. In recent years, the University is actively using the system of federal Internet-exams in the field of professional education, which contributes to the development of the quality assurance system of educational activities based on the independent external evaluation.
Training of the teaching staff is carried out in post-graduate and doctoral studies at the University in 19 research areas. Licensed Dissertation Advisory Committees have been established at the University. Since 1999, the targeted support for applicants and their supervisors has been provided. The University selects, examines and promotes advanced research and technological developments.
The Maritime University remains one of a few universities in Russia, where the military department has been preserved. The teachers who served in the Navy and in military units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation provide training for future reserve officers.
The cadets receive full state support: they live in dormitories and receive free food and clothing. Cadets of junior years do their onboard training on the sail training vessel Nadezhdaand the cargo training and production ship Professor Khlyustin. They do their pregraduation practical training on board modern ships of the Far East shipping companies.
A complex of modern navigation simulators includes an electronic cartography, ship control and maneuvering trainer, simulators of communication systems, survival at sea, engine room simulator; a new navigation simulator NTPro 5000 manufactured by Transas Marine Technologies (St. Petersburg) presents a unique modern equipment, which opens up new possibilities for implementing the University educational and additional professional programs.
New simulators of control systems for ships electric drives and an RLT and ARPA simulator have been installed, and also the classroom for training shipbuilders and repairers has been renovated and fitted with training equipment and new equipment for the computer-aided design by the PJSC Rosneft.
Practical skills of survival at sea are practiced in a 25-meter pool. Medical training courses are conducted in a licensed medical diagnostic center equipped with simulators, classrooms and instruments.
Guided by the requirements of the international conventions and national standards, the University implements the entire set of programs of additional professional maritime training of specialists. The Regional Center for Additional Maritime Education carries out the training process management.
Ship’s officers and ratings are trained under the programs of additional professional maritime training, executives, middle and top managers of the industry are retrained at the University.
The Center for coordinating e-learning and distance education technologies allows students to train under the new system, which has absorbed the forms of extramural education, distance and information technologies.
A lot of our cadets and students are winners of city, regional, Far Eastern Federal District, school and student competitions in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. Among them there are winners of international and national competitions and contests. Each year, our cadets and students become fellows of the President of Russia, the Russian Government, the Governor of the Primorsky Territory, Vladivostok city administration, and Rosneft. About 100 University scholarships named after distinguished university professors Guzhenko and Melnikov are appointed from the University extrabudgetary funding.
The Nevelskoy MSU is one of the largest research centers in the region.
The areas of development of research schools are related to security of sea and transit traffic, production and transportation of hydrocarbons, and supply of remote areas. The Research Institute of Maritime Transport was established. The University pursues research on improving the fleet maintenance, navigational aids and methods, ship maintenance and repair, ship repairing management, and flaw detection in the onboard equipment.
Our researchers investigate the reliability of marine technical facilities, test soft and flexible structures in sea transport. They work to increase the efficiency of engineered navigation aids including the use of laser technologies. They also develop energy- and resource-saving and environmental technologies in the transport and energy. They develop technologies of desalination and use of sea water in ships. They work to improve transport technologies and methods of sea transport management, the introduction of Internet technologies, and conduct research in the field of anthropology, psychology and behavior of marine fleet specialists in extreme conditions.
Since 1997 systematic research expeditions on the sailing training ship Nadezhda under the Far Eastern Shipboard University Project have been launched on the integration basis with the institutes of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the universities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Far East. A lot of research of the world-wide ocean and the atmosphere was done during the Nadezhda circumnavigation.
Mutually beneficial cooperation of the Asia-Pacific Region has beneficial effects on the development of international relations of the Maritime University. The University has numerous foreign contacts, successfully cooperating with maritime and technical universities of the Asia-Pacific Region. The Nevelskoy MSU jointly with foreign universities fulfills international educational programs using the method of deep language immersion. The Maritime University is a member of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Asian Maritime and Fishery Universities Forum (AMFUF), the World Association of Maritime Education and Training institutions (GlobalMET), the Global Partnership for Education, DNV, and the Global Partnership for Conflict Prevention.
All the facilities for proper study and leisure are provided on the campus. There are dormitories, a student catering establishment, a dispensary and a medical-diagnostic center, a Youth Center, a Museum of Maritime Education, a few gyms, some specialized reading rooms, a swimming pool, a yacht club, and a water station on the University campus.
The Center for Creative Youth Development organizes leisure activity of the University students. The Center holds evenings, discos, shows and competitions of amateur art activities.
The Sea Ball is especially popular. A vocal ensemble Cover, a choreographic ensemble Pulse, a chorus, a KVN team, a folk instruments ensemble Antares, a creative studio Fashion from the Chest, a school of show presenters Triangle, a Club of song non-professional authors Nadezhda, and a volunteer corps Breeze function in the Center.
The creative groups repeatedly became winners of the city, regional, national and international competitions: winner of the International Festival of Arts and Sports in Mudanjiang, China, three times winner of the All-Russian Festival of Creativity «TranspArt», Moscow, twice winner of the All-Russian Contest «Solstice», winner of the Festival of Student Creativity «Horizons of Northern Palmira», Saint-Petersburg, winner of the regional competition «Argo» and many others...
Sports groups specializing in swimming, volleyball, basketball, mini football, freestyle wrestling, boxing, sambo-wrestling, table tennis, kickboxing and sailing operate at the University. Experienced specialists and honored masters of sports of Russia are trainers there. After graduating from the University along with a major degree the most ardent physical culturists get a document on the additional profession: instructor in swimming, yachting, etc.
One of the main criteria for the success of sports activities is the performance of our athletes in competitions at various levels: Volleyball Championship of the Far Eastern Federal District among women; Vladivostok Volleyball Championship; Primorsky Krai Volleyball Championship; Primorsky Krai Mini-Football Championship; Open Beach Volleyball Championship; Olympics for Schools of the Asian Pacific Association of Teachers of Russian and Literature among foreign students; Regional Student GTO Festival; All-Russian Spartakiad for Transport Universities.
The Nevelskoy MSU organizes and holds sports events, among which the main ones are the traditional Nevelskoy MSU Regatta, the Nevelskoy Cup Regatta, the Rector’s Prize Open Volleyball Competition, the Nevelskoy MSU Comprehensive Spartakiad for cadets and students, and others. About 20% of the students and cadets are involved in all sports events, including the training process. Because the University belongs to maritime sector, the course has been held on the development of water sports such as rowing and sailing. Today, the sailing school is open, where not only students and cadets, but also all the children in Vladivostok are trained.
For over 20 years the University has been holding an annual open Admiral GI Nevelskoy Cup Regatta, in which athletes from different Primorye yacht clubs participate. Yachtsmen of the Maritime University are permanent members of all the major competitions in the region and the Far East: Vladivostok Cup, 50-mile race, Championships of Vladivostok and Primorye, Seven Feet Cup, Double handed, and Sekan Cup (Japan). For the fourth year, they have been successfully competing in the Russia’s Yachting Championship among the yachts of Conrad 25 class held in Vladivostok.
Cadets of the University are the leaders in distant sports voyages. Their routes ran to the shores of England, the USA, Germany, Poland, Holland, France, Australia, Japan, Panama, Mexico, Nicaragua, Italy, New Zealand, and other countries. They sailed down the Amur, Volga, Northern Dvina, Don, Pereloga, Vistula, Rhine, and Thames; passed the Baltic, Belomorian, Volga-Don, Panama, Suez and other canals. In heir sports voyages on the seas of the Far East our yachters gathered information on the history of geographical discoveries, sailed along the sea routes of Nevelskoy and Commander Bering, installed 8 monuments on Sakhalin, the Kola Peninsula, the Commander Islands, and carried out archeological excavations in Kamchatka, Chukotka, the Commander Islands and Alaska.
As part of the Federal Target Program «Development of the Russian transport system» the government decided to establish the Maritime Research and Educational Complex at the premises of the Maritime University. This project envisages the construction of a modern library, modern campus, updating and improvement of the simulator complex, infrastructure organization for maritime safety training, as well as arrangement of the areas to provide oil spill prevention training.
